Orlando: Maybe you’ve already got this downloaded or bookmarked, but the first thing I point to is the IRS instructions. This is 100 pages that they’ve put a lot of work into to make the job as straightforward as possible, even for those of us that aren’t accounting pros.

Nolo Press has an excellent book Every Nonprofit’s Tax Guide, which has an extensive section on the 990.

I use 990 Online, https://efile.form990.org/ for preparing the 990. I like it because each step of the way, ypu can click on the question which provideds IRS back up info.

For learning Form 990 preparation, I’d start with the IRS instructions and prior completed returns before buying expensive books. There are also several nonprofit accounting courses and practical guides available online. Personally, I find working through an actual 990 alongside the instructions far more useful than simply reading theory.
