Programmatic Budget
Posted by laura-cossey on July 30, 2024 at 3:43 pmOur organization builds online education platforms for educators at both the k-12 and higher education levels as well as do research for field building. We have always struggled with the best ways to identify our programmatic costs. Does anyone have any great ideas or resources to share? Thank you!

Laura, Say more about the struggle to identify the programmatic costs. Is it a systems issue (ie no way to note on a timecard which hours are program vs admin), or?

Hi Laura
Thanks for visiting the forum! Propel Nonprofits has a great document and tool that can help you get started. It can be found on our website here: https://nonprofitfinancials.org/resources/true-program-costs-program-budget-and-allocation-template-and-resource-2/

This guide and accompanying spreadsheet template break the process of understanding true program costs down into several stages.

Also can you tell us what accounting system and what payroll system you are using?

Navigation feels logical, with menus placed exactly where you expect them to be. This creates a comfortable experience, especially for New Zealand users who prefer platforms that don’t require a learning explanation.

Separating programme and administrative costs can become surprisingly complicated. The starting point is usually knowing how staff actually divide their time between activities. Without that information, allocations can become rather subjective. A consistent method is probably more valuable than trying to create a perfect system. Once everyone understands the approach, keeping the records becomes much easier.
