Despite some considerations about societal value, the dominant paradigm in business model literature remains centered on economic value creation as the ultimate goal.… For NPOs, societal value is understood not as a support to economic value but as an end in itself. This paper aims to propose a theoretical framework that highlights the fundamental mechanisms underlying the creation of societal value and its capture to address the following research question: What are the mechanisms of societal value creation and capture underlying the business model of nonprofit organizations?
