  • The world of endowments can sometimes feel like trying to understand quantum physics. This piece makes a strong case for flexibility over the traditional idea of forever, which I found refreshing. The comparison between true and term endowments is particularly clear and raises an important question about whether permanent endowments are always the right fit. The idea of having a five-year plan to spend a million dollars feels considerably more engaging than having a fund sitting there that nobody can touch.

  • Mark, thanks for sharing this. It is an interesting look at how accounting can influence an organisation’s reputation and perceived legitimacy. The section on the “starvation cycle” is particularly thought-provoking, showing how an obsession with keeping overhead low can actually undermine effectiveness. It is a good reminder that there is plenty of nuance behind the numbers. The comparison between the original overhead ratio and the new one was a real eye-opener. A webinar with these scholars sounds like a worthwhile opportunity.

That is an interesting point, Kristin. Pass-through funds can appear on the Form 990, depending on the circumstances and the organisation’s role in handling them. The agency relationship is particularly important because funds received on behalf of others may not necessarily be treated as the organisation’s own revenue. A clear note explaining the arrangement can also make the figures easier for readers to understand.

AI can be particularly useful for grant writing drafts and sorting routine donor emails, which can save quite a bit of time. The main thing is to review its output carefully, as AI can sometimes produce inaccurate information. Data privacy also deserves careful attention, especially with sensitive nonprofit information. I would automate routine tasks, while keeping important decisions with people.

Cryptocurrency can be an interesting option for nonprofits, although it comes with some added complexity. In my view, the key question is whether your donors are actually likely to use it rather than simply following the trend. A platform such as The Giving Block could make accepting crypto more straightforward, but I would prioritise clear accounting, security and compliance before expanding into it.
