The Future: What's on your mind?
In preparation for today’s webinar, we asked people what questions were on their minds. My sorting suggests that they fall into five broad categories:
I. What chaos can we expect from new administration?
• What to watch out for in a Trump-lead country and ways to combat these changes?
• What do you see the new administration doing with regard to taxing nonprofits?
• What are the anticipated changes in tax policy as it relates to charitable giving?
• The U.S. House has just passed HR 9495, a bill that dramatically expands the Treasury’s power to revoke tax-exempt status from nonprofits it deems to be “supporting terrorism. Can you speak to strategies for bracing for impact of this bill?
• Is there any indication that tax-deductible donation levels will change? If the Fed lowers interest rates again or even lower, what impact might that have on donations?
• Is the new administration proposing any policies that will significantly impact foundations?
• How would you advise nonprofit leaders to assess their financial risk in the wake of HR9495 Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act?
• How long will it be before we start experiencing cuts in existing federal funding programs?
• Do you anticipate a drastic rollback of federal funding for nonprofit organizations working directly with undocumented immigrants?
II. How will the sector advocate for best outcomes?
• What role will the nonprofit sector play in leading the resistance to the rolling back of civil and social rights gains?
• What plans might nonprofit intermediaries have to safeguard the work of many nonprofits in the impending political climate?
• In the political advocacy space, are funders likely to continue the general trend in philanthropy toward more general support funding?
• How can we prepare youth for what 2025 may hold for our organizations and how that may impact them?
• How can our organization continue to advocate for social, environmental, and racial justice in the face of legislative resistance and financial pressures?
III. Are current federal allocations in danger?
• Will currently allocated funds via the federal government stay secure for this round if it’s already been allocated?
• What strategies do you recommend for non-endowed cultural organizations that have modest reserves are highly dependent on federal and local government funding?
• What is the forecast for federal grants?
• What happens to US grant and contracts if that department is eliminated?
• What are options for nonprofits whose primary funding comes from state and federal grants?
• How can government-funded organizations prepare for the cuts?
IV. Where will future nonprofit sector funding come from?
• Will foundations fund immigration legal services providers more given the change in administration?
• Where are technology upgrades and training funding coming from now and in the next few years?
• What is the financial outlook for nonprofits in 2025?
• What is the future of Medicaid and how will this impact children’s behavioral health?
• How will the election results impact no-profit giving and financial trends in 2025?
• How can we overcome our financial needs with potential government cuts?
• How should we change our asks of funders in light of changing circumstances and potential future attacks on nonprofits?
V. What management challenges will nonprofits confront?
• What should we be doing on the operations and finance side to protect ourselves if departments of the federal government begin to target organizations that are opposed to the incoming administration’s politics?
• What is/are a good approach to budget forecasting given the many uncertainties?
• What is your advice for changes in messaging strategies to attract donors who want to support nonprofits in light of the new challenges we are likely to face in the new political landscape?
• What advice do you have for organizations struggling with incomplete audits for prior years due to managing extra COVID funds?
• If potential government funding cuts impact our programs, what proactive steps can we take to diversify revenue streams?
• How do you message impacts regarding defunding to various stakeholders?
