Generally, I would say – NO. They should be serving in an oversight capacity, not doing the day to day work. The only time this might be acceptable is if this was a small baby nonnprofit with no staff, but even then they should find a bookkeeper as soon as it is feasible.

I would probably keep these responsibilities separate. A board treasurer is generally better placed to provide oversight than to handle routine bookkeeping. Having the same person reviewing and entering transactions can make internal controls harder to maintain. Keeping the treasurer focused on reviewing reports and financial oversight seems like a more sensible arrangement.

I was going to ask something similar. There is a small organization that seems to think that their accountant is actually a board member. But…. technically, the accountant is NOT a board member but a paid person on their “team” and can attend board meetings or finance committee meetings but not as a member. They should look for a treasurer to serve in that capacity… But… is it ok for now considering they are small… or … can the same firm have a staff member do the day to day bookkeeping and the owner serve as the “board member”/ treasurer?
