I spoke with our CPA about this very issue and she told me their QB expert thinks we can keep QB Desktop even though QB is “forcing” everyone toward online. I am keeping my fingers crossed as we certainly cannot afford the added expense of the online payroll package. I had no idea the functionality was so backward so thanks for that heads up!

Hi Holly, we have also been using UST for many years and it’s worked well for us. The only drawback is if you get hit with one or two hefty unemployment claims it can wipe out your reserve and will cost you more for a year or two until it builds back up. On the plus side, the staff at UST are extremely knowledgeable and very helpful in navigating the claims system.

Hi Marie, I have heard about organizations having both good and bad experiences with getting a fiscal sponsor. Our nonprofit is over 50 years old so it was different back then. I would recommend asking for legal advice and thoroughly vetting any business/organization before signing anything.

Thanks everyone. I am very aware of the impact it would have on our low-wage hourly employees, which is why I am fighting so hard against it.

For those of you who are on a lag schedule, how do you deal with quarterly taxes?

We have so many things tied to the semi-monthly schedule, including worker’s comp wage reporting and retirement fund contributions. It just feels like an absolute nightmare to unwind and start over.

A major part of our mission is providing used building materials to the community at low cost and when everything shut down for COVID we had to close our doors for a significant number of weeks. Thankfully, as an essential retail business we were able to pivot and find ways to reopen safely fairly soon during the shutdown – at first only allowing shopping by appointment with one staff member on site, then gradually opening back up with recommended restrictions for staff and customer safety. The PPP loan program saved us and we were able to retain our staff and pay them while we were closed.
